How to get motivated to workout
It’s cold and wet outside, and the sofa is soooo cosy... do you spend more time talking yourself out of a workout? Here's how to stop the excuses and get your sweat on!
Want to get fit but not sure where to start? Does the thought of going to the gym make you want to curl back up in bed? We hear ya! Working out is hard as hell and that’s even before you’ve hit the gym – getting up, getting psyched and getting ready is half the battle!
Before you go and hit that snooze button again, read these top tips on how to get motivated from Sam Chandler, owner of SLC Fitness in Leicester.
Make sure you don’t set unrealistic goals. If you haven’t exercised in a while, the chances are that you may struggle to get to the gym or to a class seven days a week for the rest of 2022! Start slow, ease yourself back in and make sure exercise fits around your schedule and lifestyle without burning you out.
PLAN YOUR SCHEDULE
Preparation is key. If you decide at the start of the week which days you are planning to exercise, chances are you are more likely to stick to it. Even better, write it in the diary. If you set aside 10 minutes to exercise chances are you will exercise for longer and keep going, but setting aside 10 minutes can help give you that kickstart.
CREATE A BUDDY SYSTEM
Plan to exercise or go to the gym with a friend. Getting a friend involved means that you can both stay accountable to each other. It will also make you feel more at ease if you are nervous to try a class or go to the gym, at least you have a familiar face for that extra support.
Pack your gym bag the night before rather than the morning or evening of as you are then more likely to talk yourself out of it if you leave it to the last minute. If you are working from home and don’t have any zoom meetings, get in your gym gear so that you are ready to go straight away.
My most important tip is whatever form of exercise you choose to do, make sure you are enjoying yourself. Even if that means going for a walk, dancing around your kitchen, playing hide and seek or tag with your kids. If you are moving and enjoying yourself the results will show; you don’t necessarily have to be doing spin classes and hard core CrossFit sessions a week to see results! If you feel like you are dreading working out and you are not enjoying what exercise you are doing, you will more than likely not stick to it. So whatever you choose make sure it brings you happiness.
