Modern Painters, New Decorators, Sleeper Giant Exhibition, Aug 11 – Oct 10

Join the opening and launch of ‘Sleeper, Giant’, an exhibition and book about public sculpture. The exhibition is free to enter, and open to all. Blackbird Coffee will be serving hot drinks and brownies throughout the event. Children are welcome to join in with the free family activity guide, aimed at 5yrs+, materials included. The project is accompanied by a season of workshops, sculpture trails, talks and events.

Leicester Castle Classic 2018, Leicester, Sat 11 Aug

The penultimate race in this year’s British Cycling Road Series brings 120 of the fastest riders in the country back to the streets of Leicester. A spectacular, colourful and exhilarating road race along narrow city streets from King Power to Castle over cobbles and around the Mile Straight makes a 80km race in total. Visitors can also enjoy a full race programme and challenge races takes place at Leicester Cycle Circuit from 10-4pm. This year’s riders include Ed Clancy – triple Olympic champion, who rode with Bradley Wiggins, Chris Hoy and Geraint Thomas at Beijing 2008 and London 2012.

Ride Leicester Festival, 11 Aug – 26 Aug

A two-week celebration of cycling in the heart of Leicester’s city streets and open to everyone. This year’s events include: Leicester Castle Classic (see above), Let’s Ride Leicester – join 12,000 other family cyclists on a gentle ride around the city, Green Bicycle Mystery Weekend – discover Leicester with one of the UK’s most enduring social history cases and Open Streets – share the streets of Leicester with a celebration of inclusive cycling.

Come for a fun family day full of activities to help you find out more about the insect pals and pests in your back yard. Meet local beekeeper Stuart Taylor and you’ll be able to get a close-up look at a frame of live honeybees and find out how his delicious honey is made. Help our minibeast expert Sally Cunningham to build a bug hotel in the woodland or have a go at pond-dipping- you can follow a special trail to find out which are the pollinators’ favourite plants and meet some of the local wildlife craftsmen.
