Melton Mowbray Food festival, Sat 7 Oct – Sun 8 Oct 

Now in its 14th year, this food festival takes place in Melton’s covered historic livestock market. Expect around 200 stands showcasing some of the UK’s best locally-produced food and drink, complemented by a street food arena serving hot food from around the world such as South Africa, France, India, Spain, Sri Lanka and more, as well as the traditional English Hog Roast, roast beef and bison burgers. There’ll also be live demonstrations from professional chefs such as Rachel Green and Jo Pratt in the Food Theatre, expert butchers showing people how to carve and cook the best joints of meat, entertainment with a gospel choir and ukulele band and a new, enlarged Kids Food Zone. Tickets are priced at £6 (£5 in advance). Children under 16 enter free.

Diwali Light Switch-On, Leicester, Sunday 8 Oct – Sunday 22 Oct 

The Diwali lights switch-on brings the Golden Mile alive with a street party like no other with around 35,000 people in attendance. For the rest of the month, celebrate the festival of lights in the biggest festival outside of south Asia in the city’s very own Golden Mile, better known as Belgrave Road. On Diwali Day, 19 October you can expect fireworks, late-night shopping, tasty food, music, dance performances and more.
