Summer Sundays: The Good, the Bad and the Ugly, Sun Aug 12

Come for a fun family day full of activities to help you find out more about the insect pals and pests in your back yard. Meet local beekeeper Stuart Taylor who supplies the Barnsdale Gardens gift shop- you’ll be able to get a close-up look at a frame of live honeybees and find out how his delicious honey is made. Help our minibeast expert Sally Cunningham to build a bug hotel in the woodland or have a go at pond-dipping- you can follow a special trail to find out which are the pollinators’ favourite plants and meet our local wildlife craftsmen.

Welland Park Food Festival, Market Harborough, Sat 4 Aug

For a celebration of the region’s best food and drink, head to the annual food fest this weekend. There will be local, national and international cuisine on offer featuring mouth watering hot food, a drinks zone, cakes, cheese, pies, olives, and more, a fair for youngsters and a demonstration kitchen for foodies looking for tips from professional chefs. The Reluctant Dragon, Outdoor Theatre, Bosworth Battlefield, Sun 5 Aug

Quantum Theatre is bringing the story to you this summer. Everyone knows St George has to do battle with the dragon, but what happens when the dragon simply won’t fight St George? In this beloved classic story, a young boy befriends a poetry-loving dragon living in the Downs above his home. When the town-folk send for St. George to slay the dragon, the boy needs to come up with a clever plan to save his friend and convince the townsfolk to accept him. Tickets: Adults £12.50, Child £9.00 or Family £40.00. 6-8pm

Curve Live! 10th birthday celebrations, Leicester Sun 26 August

Enjoy this free, one-off concert will feature musical numbers, drama and dance performances from theatrical stars and friends of Curve. The event is also scheduled to include performances from Sam Bailey, Anton Stephans  Dex Lee and Djalenga Scott (Grease the Musical, Curve) and many more. From 7pm. Audiences can apply for up to two free tickets to Curve Live! via Curve’s website by calling 0116 242 3595 or by visiting the theatre in person. Rum and Reggae Fest, Leicester Athena, Fri Aug 24

Sample the widest selection of Rums and the smoothest selection of Reggae music in the UK as Athena will be transformed into tropical paradise. On entry, visitors will be given a Rum Atlas and  A Welcome Rum Punch so you can take a Rum journey around the world, hosted by our very own Reggae Sound System, tasting rare and special craft rums from the West Indies, Cuba, South America & the US. The Countryside Show, Beacon Hill, Mon Aug 27

The fantastic family event has evolved from the popular Wood Fair, which was held at Beacon Hill for more than 11 years. From extreme mountain biking and dog agility to birds of prey demonstrations, there will be some spectacular features as well as live music, a main arena, food marketplace, marquees, stalls and plenty of free activities for children including tree climbing, wall climbing, bird-box making and much more. Join the street party and celebrate Leicester’s diverse cultures and experience the traditions of the Caribbean in one colourful celebration at the Caribbean Carnival. Grab your whistle and your loudest, brightest outfit and dance along to the infectious music beats, marvel at the multi-coloured floats on a street parade through the city centre, then make your way up to Victoria Park for food, drinks and even more fun and performances.

Annual Rutland Beer Festival, The Grainstore, Rutland Aug 23-26

The 19th Rutland Beer Festival held at The Grainstore Brewery, brings together a wide range of real ales from around the UK. Featuring over seventy Real Ales with an array of golden ales, stouts, bitters, porters and barley wines we also offer a wide selection of traditional ciders. This year this focus is on Scottish ales, and feature an intimate stage for acoustic performances during the weekend. As usual the BBQ will be in full operation from around 5pm on the opening night until close of play Monday.

Pugstock Music Festival, Great Glen, Sat Aug 25

The annual Pugstock Music Festival is taking place in aid of the local LOROS Hospice Charity. The festival is in its 3rd year and continues to grow with live music all day, stalls, street food, outside bars, kids activities and more. It’s very popular with families so waste no time getting down there to enjoy the day.

Leicester Castle Classic 2018 Sat Aug 11

The penultimate race in this year’s British Cycling Road Series brings 120 of the fastest riders in the country back to the streets of Leicester. A spectacular, colourful and exhilarating road race along narrow city streets from King Power to Castle over cobbles and around the Mile Straight makes a 80km race in total. Visitors can also enjoy a full race programme and challenge races takes place at Leicester Cycle Circuit from 10-4pm.
