Meet designer Chloe Kempster

The Chalk Paint® queen and furniture designer behind Maisie's House on TV's Money for Nothing let us in on her top local spots in Leicestershire - how many do you know?

Looking to refresh your home but don’t want to spend a small fortune? Try adding a one-off statement piece from Maisie’s House.

Fine artist and stylist Chloe creates fun and playful upcycled pieces of furniture – everything from stools to kitchen tables and is currently featured on BBC 1 show, Money for Nothing. She’s lived in the village of Fleckney pretty much her whole life so where are her top spots? Let’s find out.

The Wistow Cafe

Wistow Cafe

My mum used to have a shop here when I was younger where I used to help out. My Gran always would take us there for lunch, so it reminds me of happy times and childhood. The surrounding walks are lovely too and I love plants so will always take a quick look around the garden centre as well. I’ll always order a diet coke for a caffeine fix and some kind of salad bowl from the cafe and I always ask for extra chilli jam. I never order cake but remain hopeful that the kids will save me a little piece of theirs – it doesn’t always happen though!

Joiners Arms

I’m not the biggest pub goer, but this pub (currently closed due to Covid) used to do a special set menu every Tuesday and it was always amazing food, cosy atmosphere and such good value. I haven’t been to a local pub since before lockdown, so February 2020! Wow!

My most favourite lockdown takeaway is Thai which we collected from the Thai Esarn takeaway on Hinckley Road. Food here is cooked by two lovely little Thai ladies and last time I ordered a chicken Panang and coconut rice with a papaya salad. It was absolutely beautiful!

Local walks

I really love walking in the fields on the edge of our village, we have footpaths right outside our back door which is such a lovely feeling and walks are so accessible, but the kids also really enjoy visiting Saddington Reservoir and running through the woods at Carlton Country Park

I’ve been turning to independent online stores for my shopping and I recently bought a new bathmat with a pink sun ray design for my bathroom refurb from Peachy Parrot. I’m a big fan of Melanie Porter’s personalised wall lights, both my girls have them. Also try Chawbrook Design for personalised wall art.

Mon Amie

I use Chalk Paint a lot in my work so it’s very handy to have my local Annie Sloan stockist, Mon Amie Living (pic above) just around the corner. Always service with a smile and a beautiful shop to walk around selling stunning faux and fresh flowers. I am often looking for unusual props to stage my work so this is very handy!

Supporting local

I love Kibworth Deli. They offer a home delivery service too which is handy if the kids ever need a Rocky Road or Millionaires Shortbread pick-me-up. The Toast Office for the best toasted sandwiches. I also want to to visit Bridge House Barn Kibworth (pic above). It’s a waterfront events venue but has recently been opening as a pop-up pub through lockdown, where you can sit by the waters edge and have a gin, can’t wait to visit!
