Catch up with Katie Cardew
Can you believe the homeware designer has never left our little county? Apart from a very brief stint in London, but the allure of the countryside always drew her back so where does she head locally for fun and inspiration?
Many of you may already have come across the bold, bright and beautiful fine art prints, homewares and gifts made by Katie Cardew. A true and proud Rutlander, she now lives in South Luffenham with her partner Jamie, children Agnes and Ru as well as their Labrador, Tarka and kitten, Goldie.
Where does she like to spend her down time? Take it away Katie…
Fave local cafe/deli?
I love Fika in Oakham. Their cinnamon buns are incredible and I love a good chai tea. Plus Cavells is next door for a mooch…
Fave place to chill?
I can’t quite remember the last time I chilled (I have a 1 and 5 year old) but if I did get a day to myself, the first place I would head to would be Rutland Water Garden Nursery. I am obsessed with house plants and could spend a whole day picking out new pots and plants for the house. I also have dreams of being able to garden and even had my partner build me a raised bed for growing vegetables in but so far I’ve not managed to fulfil my gardening dreams. I am going to blame lack of time but in reality I think i’m just not that green fingered…
Local hot spots?
During lockdown my daughter got really into mountain biking so every weekend we have been going to Wakerley Woods. She loves tackling the off-road trails and we can all happily lose a few hours in the woods with the baby strapped into his carrier and Agnes whizzing off in-front along the trails! We also love Burghley House – my kids love their scooters and it’s a great place to let them run riot.
Fave local pub and restaurant?
We are so lucky to have a couple of good pubs in the village. We often head to The Boot (pictured above) which is almost too conveniently close!! I love trying lots of different foods when I go for dinner so will often order two or three starters. Their tempura prawns are sooo good. If we are feeling adventurous, we also love the Olive Branch in Clipsham. Their food is blinking lovely and the outside garden area is dreamy in the summer.
Any hidden gems you’d like to share?
When it’s really hot we like to head to Oundle and walk along the river towards Cotterstock. There are places to swim and so many pretty little spots to sit with a picnic.
Must-go for shopping
I love an afternoon in Stamford – a bit of shopping, a G&T at the Wine Bar… My favourite shop is Iris Violet – soooo many pretty dresses and shirts. We also just bought a beautiful huge gold mirror from Margo and Plum – it’s gorgeous.
Where do you go for inspiration?
I have a new range called Country Estate featuring peacocks, stags, pheasants and guinea fowl. We have a gorgeous old farmyard in our village with a flock (?!) of guinea fowl and I just love their monochrome dotty plumage and new I had to include them in the range. For my Blooms range, we asked local florist Miss Pickering to produce the flowers for me to draw from. Last summer she dropped off the most gorgous delivery of the largest bunches of flowers I have ever had! I felt like the Queen for the day! I sat in the garden for three days straight drawing the beautiful bouquets and the result turned out to be one of my favourite of all our new ranges.
Where do you like to shop for the kids?
I buy the children far too many clothes and one of my favourite kids shops is Baba of Mine in Oakham. My son has a pair of Sophie & Co yellow trousers from there and looks so adorable in them.
