Egg-cellent Easter Eggs
From bite-sized bunnies to a giant ostrich chocolate Easter egg, here's the best chocolate goodies to get your teeth into.
As always, there’s a brilliant range of Easter eggs available at the popular Thorntons store. This year they’ve upped the ante and filled their shelves with something for everyone from the little ones right through to big kids (yes that includes you Mr Muddy)!
New this year is the milk chocolate Strawberry and Prosecco Easter Egg complete with strawberry pieces embedded in the egg. If that wasn’t enough, there’s also white chocolate strawberry and prosecco truffles to work your way through.
If you prefer whisky, they’ve also got a Whisky and Butterscotch egg studded with crunchy butterscotch pieces as well as six melt-in-the-mouth butterscotch and whisky truffles for that extra something special.
My personal fave was the Dark Chocolate and Mint Egg which I had to resist the urge to finish off (after all it was only 10 o’clock in the morning) but the mini chocolate mint chocolates inside were a little easier to get through.
Although the store seems small, don’t let that deceive you; the Highcross branch stocks every single variety of Easter Egg that Thorntons have released this year and the best thing of all? You can personalise each and every egg in store at no extra cost something totally unique to the brand.
Prices start from £4 and go up to a reasonable £20 for the Marvellous Magnificent Egg which is a whopping 650g and made from Thorntons’ creamy, milk chocolate and all of their eggs are all suitable for vegetarians.
For a little luxury this Easter, Hotel Chocolat have got it covered. You know the saying ‘you feel like a kid in a candy store’ well this really hit the nail on the head when I stepped inside the store in Leicester’s Highcross.
Let’s start with the Extra Thick Eggs – they’re exactly what they say they are; ridiculously thick shells that snap open to reveal a handful of chocolates. New this year is the Champagne Egg, made with 40% milk half-strawberry-white and milk filled with Champagne truffles. Other variations include Serious Dark Fix, an utterly dark 70% egg filled with truffles, pralines, Patisserie, a half brownie, half salt caramel cheesecake egg filled with dessert-inspired chocolates and You Crack Me Up, half 40% milk half caramel-white egg , filled with mellow truffles, pralines and caramels.
Next on my list were the Egg Sandwiches – these quirky sandwich-style gifts come complete in sandwich ‘boxes’ and there’s six to choose from including Rock and Roll (Peanut Butter and banana) and Lamb and Mint (50% milk with Tasmanian mint).
If you can’t decide on what to buy for that someone special this Easter, the beautifully boxed Put All Your Eggs in One Basket is perhaps your best bet. It features a variety of eggs in all shapes and sizes and would put a big smile on anyone’s face.
For the ultimate in indulgence, the Ostrich Eggs are an absolute must! This life-size chocolate version is a treat and a half! One half is made from 40% milk chocolate, the other a slightly richer 50%, both with added puffed rice and filled with a delectable range of choccies inside! This will keep those chocaholics satisfied for about a month or so…we think!
Hotel Chocolat’s Easter range starts from £2 and go up to £80 for the Ostrich Egg and their range also include some vegan-friendly and gluten-free varieties although they may contain traces of nuts.
