We’re celebrating Afternoon Tea Week (14 Aug – 20 Aug) by picking our favourite places to indulge in cakes, crustless sandwiches and creamy scones. Here’s our pick of the best four fabuloso cafes and delis in and around the county. If you feel that there’s somewhere that we have missed off then let us know in the comments box by spreading the love and knowledge.
Wistow Cafe, Wistow
Passionate about their afternoon tea, Jane and her team over at Wistow Cafe know a thing or two about afternoon tea – they’ve been serving it for almost 10 years and have built up quite a reputation (and they won Best Cafe in the Muddy Stiletto Awards this year so you know you’re onto a good thing). Their afternoon tea comes with a range of freshly prepared sandwiches on brown and white bread, mini cocktail sausages, mini cheese and chive savoury tarts, crisps and a delicious variety of homemade cakes and tray bakes, scones with clotted cream and jam and unlimited tea and filter coffee. Pretty much everything is freshly prepared in the cafe and they can also cater for gluten free, dairy free, vegan, vegetarians.

Oakley Grange organic farm, cafe and delicatessen, Hathern
Run by Roger and Inger Mee, the Oakley Grange runs as a sustainable organic farm with a busy deli and café which is where they serve a delectable afternoon tea. This cafe is a rustic affair with exposed brick walls, floor to ceiling windows which offer views over the farm. Served after 2pm, afternoon tea here is a real treat and comes with a selection of miniature sandwiches including adventurous combinations like cheese and hot apple chutney, beef and beetroot chutney and more traditional fillings like ham and cheese or chicken and mayo. Everything is prepared in the cafe including the bread and cakes and all the ingredients are organic. Also included with the tea is two sweet scones with jam and a dollop of cream as well as two cakes of your choice (choose the coffee and walnut one and you won’t be disappointed) and a bottomless pot of tea or cafetière of coffee and a soft drink of your choice.

Castle Cottage Cafe, Oakham
This vintage styled eatery is a snug of cafe decorated with whimsical wallpaper adorning the walls, hanging watering cans, floral table cloths and more. There’s delicate crockery, pretty cake stands and tranquil garden out the back. Afternoon tea can be served at any time and comes piled high on a vintage 3-tier cake stand and filled with sandwiches, cakes and fruit scones (scone of the month for August is apricot and ginger – yum) and you can even treat yourself to a glass of Prosecco.
