7 cool places to enjoy Veganuary 2022

Are you taking on the veganuary challenge this year? Eat out at one of these cool and quirky local spots for a vegan fix you won't regret and support local indie businesses at the same time!

Restaurant 263, Leicester

This place opened just before Christmas and we love the idea behind it. Former chef of The White Peacock, Keith Sadomba is creating seasonal and produce led menus using ingredients within a 10 mile radius plus surplus ingredients from the city’s food market. They offer a full vegan menu which changes regularly depending on what they can get their hands on so expect anything from pressed carrot, whipped vegan cheese and carrot top oil or tofu with onion and garlic. £28 for a 6-course tasting menu or £35 for an 8-course tasting menu.

Luck and Boo, Melton Mowbray

Located in Melton Wellness house, Marcus (aka Luck) and his partner Becky (aka Boo) took over this place in 2019 after running a string of successful pop-up nights here. Marcus is a Michelin trained chef turned vegan and has created a popular foodie haunt for locals. The menu is just dropping with plant-based goodness and vegans will be spoilt for choice here; there’s everything from vegan Souvlaki to corn dogs, vegan fish and chips, vegan ‘boogers’ and so much more.

Herb, Leicester

This popular family-run restaurant on Granby Street has always been a hive of activity. Their veggie and vegan menu brings a little bit of South India to your plate thanks to their Keralan chefs. Food here is fresh, healthy and yes, vegan – think dosas (rice and lentil pancakes) stuffed with potatoes spices and spinach, Indian thalis, spicy biryanis and hearty veggie curries – perfect for this chilly winter weather.

Orbis Oakham

Safe to say this is the most buzzing place in town and since it reopened on Mill Street it’s got even better. While it’s not entirely vegan, there’s a few options on their brunch menu for green eaters including oyster mushrooms and tarragon toasted sourdough and bang bang cauliflower.

Fika, Oakham

They may have left the Scandi bit behind but this Mill Street cafe still serves some banging food! I love going here for brunch when I’m in town – there’s always so many options to choose from like the smokey white bean Shakshuka, the Fika bowl – brimming with veggies and spices but my personal fave is the sauteed wild mushrooms, spinach, truffle and tarragon oil on sourdough. Nom nom!

Huns Vegan

You know that feeling, you crave a burger, scoff it down and then feel guilty? Well not anymore thanks to Hun’s ‘chickHUN’ (geddit?) vegan burgers over on Welford Road. Their lip-smacking vegan burgers come with a little bit of everything including garlic mayo, bac’hun, plus, vegan cheese, pickles, lettuce. There’s also vegan beef patty burgers and loaded fries. Now there’s something to feel virtuous about! If that wasn’t enough, they’re running a fish and chip themed pop-up over at Lane 7 throughout January! Add it to your weekend plans now!

North Bar

For something a little more posh, try the vegan menu at this buzzing place on Hinckley Road. The six-course tasting menu (£46) comes with wine and gin pairing (£66.50) and features a squash velouté and pomme frites, artichoke heart, pickled beets, crispy onions, nasturtium as well as a celeriac and onion tart tatin and more. If it’s a little out of your price range, their a la carte menu has plenty of vegan options too. Sorted!
