Painting and prosecco

Want to try something different this new year? Fancy yourself as a bit of a Picasso and have a penchant for prosecco? This could be the class that kicks off your new year.

I’m not much of a painter but throw in a glass or two of prosecco and I’ll unleash my inner artist. Here’s everything you need to know about this fab new art class where you can enjoy some bubbles while brushing.

Hosted by Leicester-based artist, Kirsteen Thomson, the art classes take place in her small but inspiring studio space in Kirby Muxloe.

A bit of a local celeb – although I’m sure she won’t agree – Kirsteen’s exhibited her impressive art work on Richard III at The Guildhall and her portrait of the late king was even bought by the Richard III Society. If that wasn’t enough, last year she was a Wild Card on Landscape Artist of the Year where she painted Fountains Abbey in Yorkshire.

This was my second visit to her studio and it was great to see how she’d made room for her students. In the middle of the room, Kirsteen had set up a space for five of us to plonk ourselves down with a small canvas, easel and paint palette ready to let our creative juices run wild.

The last time I remember painting anything – apart from my nails – was during my art GCSE exam so we’re talking yonks ago but as I sat in front of my canvas I drew a complete blank and had no idea what to paint! I assume Kirsteen had pre-empted this and suggested we try a sunset but I gravitated towards the lighter colours and decided to create some abstract artwork.

There’s tonnes of stuff to dabble with – everything from acrylics to oil, pens to paintbrushes and the class was super relaxed with music and chatter in the background and throughout it all, Kirsteen was on hand, offering suggestions and tips on how to make the most of our artwork and more importantly, topping up our glasses.

The classes run from Thur Jan 17 – Thur Feb 14, 7-9pm and cost £20 and include all materials. No experience necessary – just paint, drink and have fun. If you book a block of five classes you’ll get £10 off. If that doesn’t get your paint brushes excited, she’s also running ‘Coffee Creative’ painting sessions Thursday mornings and ‘Yoga-Art’ for beginners which will include an hour of painting followed by an hour of yoga with a local instructor – perfect to chase away any January blues.
