Top places to live in Leicestershire & Rutland Rothley

A delightful des res village that has plenty to offer families. If you're looking for a luxurious pricey pad, this place won't disappoint (but there's plenty of affordable options too) and will definitely make it to the top of many people's wishlist. Part of our Top 200 Places to Live series.


Looking to upsize? Then this elegant village could be the place for you – in 2019, The Ridgeway was named of the one of the most priciest streets outside of London with properties averaging a cool one mill. However, away from that particular street, there’s plenty of more affordable properties for young couples and even empty nesters. The village has a friendly community spirit centered around Woodgate, the main shopping street and great links with neighbouring Mountsorrel.


Head into nearby Mountsorrel for a Michelin-starred meal at John’s House and order the Stonehurst Hogget; it comes from their own farm next door -you can’t get more local that that! For for a cosy and welcoming pub, you can’t beat The Blue Bell Inn. It’s got a spacious outdoor garden in the back and a lovely terrace at the front. For coffee and cake, head to Deli 1880 or family-run coffee shop, Templars of Rothley and for a Friday night curry, try Anmol Tandoori.


Pick up a bottle of vino from artisan winemaker, Rothley Wine and you can get all your groceries from Woodcock Farm Shop. There’s home grown potatoes, fresh fruit and vegetables as well as locally sourced honey and eggs and even Christmas trees in winter. Spruce up your decor with fresh flowers from Katie Alice and for the perfect gift, head to Libby’s.


The historic Rothley Court Hotel with its sweeping driveway was originally mentioned in the Domesday Book and also associated with the Knights Templar. Rothley’s beautiful restored railway station is still lit by gas light and gives an idea of a bygone era. The train still run every weekend through the glorious Leicestershire countryside. Head to Beacon Hill, where the kids can enjoy the ample play areas, plus plenty of cycling and walking routes. Nearby, Stonehurst Farm is where children can get up close with the farm animals and explore the adventure playground.

Most young children attend Rothley Primary School. Ratcliffe College is a short drive away as is the Loughborough Schools Foundation which includes a nursery, prep school, grammar school for boys and a high school for girls.


Rothley railway station was featured in the 1988 film Buster and the 2004 Miss Marple TV adaptation.


It’s not likely that you’ll be commuting daily to London but it’s just over a two hours drive or alternatively, you can get into London from Loughborough station (a 15 minute drive from Rothley) in around 75 minutes. Annual season tickets start for just under £10,000+ from here.
