Muddy tries an organic facial
If you're in need of a relaxing face-fixer with fab results, we suggest you try one at ORB, Uppingham.
As far as beauty salons go, ORB is a hidden gem – that is, if you’re not from Uppingham, Rutland. It’s utterly charming and from the moment you step inside, you know you’re somewhere special.
ORB does tranquil in spades and is so much more than just a beauty salon. For starters, it’s located in a building that dates back to 1750s so it’s ickle, we’re talking one room deep and four storeys high but that’s only half of its charm, the other half is down to the salon and its unique ethos. They believe you can’t serve from an ’empty vessel’ and are pretty much there to ‘fill’ you up and restore your radiance.
Beautifully decorated with lots of natural products, gold accessories, dried flowers, jade stones and crystals, there’s something really special about the place and you feel a sense of peace and calm as soon as you walk in. ORB is the antithesis of any salon you may have visited before – there’s no loud music, no fluffy cushions, no bright, white decor – the therapists quietly waft around and make you feel really welcome and totally comfortable.
The salon is big on using organic products and offer a range of natural skincare and wellbeing treatments. They also try to keep things as natural and organic inside so flowers are recycled to make decorations and paper has been reused as paper mache to create the gold ORB initials that hang on the wall.
I was booked in for a Signature Organic Facial and my therapist was Jemma who explained exactly what I could expect. I actually started the treatment lying on my tummy while Jemma gave me a gentle acupressure massage. I could feel my shoulders were still tense so I remembered my long, gentle yoga breathing techniques so by the time I turned around, I was totally relaxed.
She went on to cleanse my upper back, neck and face using only soil association certified organic product from a local brand in Melton Mowbray called Botanicals (you can read all about them here). She had picked products that she thought would suit my skin after our initial chat.
Jemma’s hands provided the perfect happy balance between a firm but gentle facial. It felt like a very detailed facial despite only using a handful of products but the ‘flow’ of the facial was seamless and totally relaxing – even the music was a great accompaniment (no whale music here, think more sultry vocals from the likes of John Legend – yes please). This combined with the delicious smelling products that were being languidly massaged into my face made me feel very well looked after – just taking a break from the lap top was a welcome relief.
The organic facial was finished off with a revitalising mask which was left on for a few minutes. While the mask got to work, Jemma gave me a relaxing foot massage (you can choose between a foot, hand or scalp massage) which obviously hit the spot as I dozed off for a few seconds.
Once finished, Jemma offered me some water and a little chocolate wafer before leaving me to get dressed. I wasted no time jumping off the bed to look at my face – it was firm, soft and supple and I had a dewy glow.
Check me out…
One of the most relaxing facials I’ve ever had, this one was definitely worth the trip and I promise you won’t be disappointed.
The Signature Organic Facial is £59 for 75 minutes and is frankly, worth every penny.
