The ultimate hair makeover at Indy Hairdressing
When it comes to hair I’m seriously low maintenance – no I mean serrrriously. The last time I had my hair cut was November 2015 – I know I know it’s a sin!
But I’ve never had much luck when it comes to finding a good hairdresser. I usually leave feeling totally underwhelmed or can’t wait to get out of the salon to see how much hair has actually been cut off (even though I only asked for a trim).
So when I rocked up at Indy Hairdressing, it was with much trepidation – after all I was going to get almost two years worth of hair chopped off.
The salon sits on the corner of Guildhall Lane. There’s no big, flashy signage, it’s simple and unassuming but a totally different story once you’re inside.
Walking into Indy’s is like walking into what feels like the most busiest salon in town. At 9.30am there’s already a hive of activity. Girls with glossy hair and perfect make up sit at the reception desk, the young Saturday girls usher clients in to get their hair washed and others scuttle between the floors armed with hair gadgets and accessories for the other clients upstairs.
Today my appointment was booked with the man himself, Indy. As the creative director of the salon, he’s been cutting hair for more than 20 years and is a perfectionist in every sense of the word – as I soon found out.
When I arrive, he’s busy curling someone’s hair but is quick to greet me. We sit down and I explain what I’m after – a classy but cool bob but with plenty of bounce and body – something my hair has been lacking for quite some time. I show him some pictures to give him an idea and he immediately gets it (phew)!
Instead of washing my hair first, Indy straightens it and then cuts it using clippers (yes that’s right). Within seconds he’s done and I don’t even wince at the thought of how much hair is on the floor. Indy explains that he’s cutting into the hair to give me a slightly feathered, uneven look as opposed to a blunt cut.
I’ve seen his posts on Instagram so I’m not surprised when he asks if he can take some pictures of my hair. “Of course as long as I’m not in the shot.” (I never look my best on a Saturday morning). Indy explains he’s only been using Instagram for about a year but confesses he’s addicted to it and has seen a boost in new customers since he’s been posting. He asks his colleague to record his techniques and take pictures so he never averts his attention from my hair.
I was originally booked in for 45 minutes but I ended up spending almost two hours with Indy. He’s a master at what he does and gives you his undivided attention. After a quick blow dry he loosely curled my hair and my look was complete.
I think you’ll agree the new look ticks all the boxes I was after and more. He left it long enough so I could still tie it back, but short enough so that my hair cut doesn’t go unnoticed.
I love it so much I just have to show it to you from every angle.
In all honestly, it’s one of the best hair cuts I’ve had. My hair went from lack lustre locks to a cool and classy bob and looked even better than I expected. Indy takes a few more shots for Instagram, when my hair looks this good he can take as many as he wants.
