90S NAIL POLISH SHADES
While I’m a big fan of neons, flouros and sunshine-y oranges in the summer, come autumn I’m casting around for something a little different to swipe across my finger and toe nails. You get bored looking at the same old colours, don’t you?
New York brand Essie’s Fall 2017 collection, which has just arrived in Superdrug and Boots, has caught my eye. The six muted shades are Nineties’ themed, with names like Girlie Grunge, Saved By The Belle and, er, Dressed To The Nineties (bit Ronseal that one but hey). To be honest, I don’t entirely get the Nineties connection – in fact I can’t remember painting my nails much at all back then (too busy attending the opening of every envelope in town and falling out of nightclubs perhaps). However the colour palette is rather lovely.
I’m currently wearing the chic Merlot red on my toes – fashion-wise, there’s loads of burgundy and scarlet pieces around for autumn, so it’ll chime nicely with those shades, while my fingers are a-typing adorned with an unusual periwinkle blue. I love a blue nail – a slightly “off” colour like that can add a tiny edge to your outfit (and mood, for that matter). There’s also a deep purply/navy shimmery number in the collection that’ll look nonchalant with an LBD when winter properly hits. They’re £7.99 a pop, which is decent value for a brand that’s also used by beauty pros in salons.
They’ve got substance as well as as style – these polishes have the perfect consistency; thin enough to neatly build up several layers but thick enough that you can get away with one coat. Plus the shape of the brush allows you to coat smaller nails with just one neat stroke. I’m completely cack-handed when it comes to painting my own nails but even I can’t mess up. Basically, they’ve got it nailed (*gets coat*).
