Pie perfection! Where to find the best ones during British Pie Week

7 Mar 2017

Hurrah it’s British Pie Week (6 – 12 March). What do you mean you didn’t know!? It’s a good job then that i’ve rounded up the best places to pick up a piece of flaky pastry goodness…

Walker & Son

Walker & Son is a stalwart when it comes to making and baking pies. They’ve been around since 1842 so know a thing or two about these golden pieces of pastry and still use an original dcipe to create their classic pork pies. Ian is their master pie maker and has been at the job for more than 38 years – he’s even created personalised pies for the Queen. Well if it’s good enough for the Queen. Pop int other flagship store and try their award-winning original pork pie or choose fresh red wine and portobello mushroom or ham and leek.

Dickinson and Morrison

Melton Mowbray is famed for its pork pies and way back in 1851, John Dickinson opened his first bakery in Nottingham Street. Today you’ll find Ye Olde Pork Pie Shoppe in exactly the same place. According to the bakery, there are 12 specific steps to making a pie and they’ve perfected it to an art form. Indulge in one of their classic pies described by themselves as ‘Pork Pie Bliss’.

Brocklebys Farm Shop

Try something a little more exotic and tuck into a Moroccan lamp pie at Brockleys farm shop. This succulent piece of home grown lamb is cooked to a traditional North African recipe and encased in short crust butter pastry made with locally milled flour and glazed with free-range eggs from Windy Ridge Farm. Not your thing? Then stick with a good old cheese and potato pie.

Nice Pie

With a name like Nice Pie, you’d expect a nice pie or two – what you actually get is award-winning pies. Since opening in 2013, expert pie producer Katharine Walmsley has had Jamie Oliver and Jimmy Doherty visit and make pies in the bakery and at the 2016 British Pie Awards won a whopping 11 awards. Some of their award-winning pies include steak, roasted onion and cheddar, chicken champagne and truffle and beetroot, potato and cheese pies to name a few. Tomorrow is the 2017 British Pie Awards where they will be revealing some new tempting flavours and fillings.
